Moving Windows XP or 2003 Server to a new Machine

First complete a copy operation of the old drive to the new drive if required in the source machine.

When the copy operation is complete, remove the new drive install it in the new system and boot up the new computer with the windows XP/2003 installation disk. You will need to change the system boot sequence so that the system is set to boot from the CD/DVD drive first. The boot sequence can be easily changed in the BIOS setup. Press any key when prompted to boot from the XP/2003 installation disk.

You will now need to perform a 'Windows XP/2003 repair' which redetects all hardware and reinstalls the system files without resetting the user registry, changing user applications, or user data present on the system. This process adapts your Windows XP/2003 install to the new hardware profile it is running on.

During the boot from CD/DVD choose the 'Press enter to set up Windows XP/2003 now' option when prompted. Then, press F8 to skip the EULA, when the option presents itself, press 'R' to begin the repair installation.

Be very careful not to in advertently set you computer to simply reinstall the new drive. If you do this, the operating system install will start from scratch, wiping out your data in the process. The computer will go through the entire XP/2003 installation process.

Once the Window XP/2003 repair installation has completed, boot the system normally. You will be prompted to activate Windows XP/2003 again. Follow the onscreen procedure to activate Windows XP/2003 again. Once Windows XP/2003 is running, the final steps are to reinstall any Drivers, or service packs that may be missing.

At this point all should be ready to go. It is a good idea not to reformat or wipe your old drive until you run this install of Windows for awhile to make good and sure that everything is working as expected.
